Let me offer a contrarian view on tonight's debate. The Democrats had a triumph. Now, how the hell can you say that? With Joe Biden slumbering and tumbling onto the stage, hoarse from probably over practice, actually pretty good at hitting his bullet points, but with such a weak demeanor and voice, everything went wrong for Joe Biden tonight.
And that's why this is such good news for the Democrats, because the Republicans made a strategic error in allowing a debate to happen before the Democratic Convention. This abysmal debate performance by President Biden gives the Democrats the clear opportunity and reason to say, Joe, we love you and we thank you for defeating Donald Trump last time.
And we are going to go in a different direction. And that's what they have the opportunity to do. And, you know, I cannot imagine after the debate tonight with the conversations that are happening among Democratic donors and strategists tonight that Joe Biden is even going to survive the night politically.
I think he will he'll probably still be around, but he I think he lost the nomination tonight and that will begin to become very official tomorrow morning because the bloodletting has to stop. So the Democrats have an opportunity.
This was a triumphant night for them strategically and politically, because if this debate had happened after Joe Biden was nominated by the Democrats and after Donald Trump was nominated by the Republicans, the Democrats would be in a cataclysmic situation right now.
Democrats have plenty of opportunity to really screw this one up as well if they turn to Kamala Harris, you know, she would have performed as poorly in that debate as the president did, not because she would be as weak appearing, but because she does not have the substance.
She would not know the bullet points. She would fumble all the way through and she just does not have that capacity. So if the Democrats now turn to her as the nominee, that'll be another catastrophe for them.
And we'll see whether they do. There certainly will be pressure to nominate a woman and an African -American, and that argues in her favor for some on the base, but she is just not going to win against a Donald Trump, I'm afraid to say.
Gavin Newsom seems to be the guy who has been groomed for this moment, and I bet he's salivating tonight, trying not to be too obvious about it.
But he is the one who has already entered the fray. He has been President Biden's envoy to China. He has debated Governor DeSantis. He has positioned himself as the go-to candidate for 2028. But now he is the go-to candidate for 2024.
And if the Democrats are smart, he would be probably one of their best choices. And nobody else out there that I can think of who is better positioned than Gavin Newsom right now. So if the Democrats are smart, they probably will go to Gavin.
The disaster there could be if Gavin continues to pander to the far left in the party. And if people get wind of the mess he has created here in California while he's been actively running for president and letting the state suffer the consequences.
He has not been the effective governor that frankly I expected him to be. And he's not been the centrist governor that I frankly expected him to be. And his job performance I don't think is going to be impressive.
But I do think that he can beat Donald Trump and that he probably will beat Donald Trump if the Democrats have the sense to nominate someone like him. There are stronger candidates. There are more unifying candidates than Gavin Newsom.
But they are not out there. There's no clear choice. It would cause a bloodbath to try to choose between them. The Democrats, if they're smart, they will make a quick pivot. But Democrats and groups in general are not that smart.
So we'll see what happens. But I will tell you tonight's debate, cataclysmic for Joe Biden and a just miracle for the Democrats, an opportunity for them to turn this around. And we'll see. whether they blow it or not.
This has been a moment of BS. I'm Bill Shireman and I am speaking for the middle majority, the 70% of Americans who actually have not lost our minds and have the capacity to work together to face and overcome every challenge that we face.
But until we can speak with one voice, until we have the media and the political resources to bring that middle together, the future of the country is in the hands of the extremists and the status quo interest groups.
And that has got to change. We have the opportunity right now. Let's step forward with it. Join us inthistogetheramerica.org. Let's work together and give this silenced majority the voice and the country the governing majority that we need.
Let me know what you think and join us.
